  Career Management Answers Your Questions...
The Globe recently sat with Anne Jones, Director of Career Management at MSB...

What do you personally define as Career Management’s role at MSB?
I personally see our role is to make sure every student is able to successfully begin their post-MBA career, and has the skills to continue to grow throughout his or her career. I will see myself as successful if by 2013, the Class of 2008 feel themselves to be successful and know that Georgetown was the best decision they ever made.

What are the specific resources available to students from CM?

On our EASE site, we have Vault Gold, Vault Industry Guides, Wetfeet, H1Base, Going Global, Career Leader, Fed Jobs, the GUMBA Job listing. Through EASE, we have documents on many companies, what they have said at past presentations, and common questions. Through the Business Information Center (BIC), we have one of the strongest business libraries in the nation, along with all the sites that the BIC subscribes to. Through Interview Stream, our students have the chance to practice some of the most common interview questions and hear from professionals on interview techniques. On Blackboard, Arlene Hill has listed all her key documents she uses in her classes including the decisional balance sheets, internship lists, and negotiation worksheets. Also, Blackboard has a great discussion board that can help you find people with similar interests and contacts.

What differentiated strategy do you have for the international students in their career search?
I feel a strong connection with the international students, as I was one myself when getting my MBA in the U.K. As an international student you have to work harder and have a thicker skin. Right now, the reality of the time is US immigration and visa regulations are tough and that is unlikely to change until the next elections. This doesn’t just affect our students, but also our clients.

But I don’t think any international student should compromise long term goals. Maybe you’ll have to go through a different door, but that doesn’t mean you should give up.

Early on, look at doors that are open and put your energy there. But use creative techniques to look for opportunities that aren’t coming to campus. For instance, H1B and Going Global are great sites. Plus, every day I go through page B2 in the Wall Street Journal. When you know what you want, go out and try to get it. Throw yourself 100% behind something. And remember, being part of Georgetown, we have a lot of organizations and people that are supportive.

Right now, Simona Chin meets a lot of the international students, and she will be doing more of this with groups of students based on their home regions. This helps us understand students changing needs. It’s not a one-size-fits-all relationship. We want to ensure we understand the individual’s needs, and also the specific regional and country needs.

What are the biggest areas of improvement students should focus on based on employer feedback?
There are two major areas of improvement: Students need to go to more presentations and apply to more jobs. Employers are wondering where you all are. Persistence, passion, and polish. Persistence comes from the fact employers are saying we don’t hear from Georgetown students enough. Polish comes from practice and preparation. That’s why we have Interview Stream and mock interviews.

What efforts does CM make to maintain a relationship with alumni?
Our relationship with alumni is very strong and that is one of our key strengths at Georgetown. We work with the alumni department for events and you can ! nd alums through Hoyas Online and through EASE. Georgetown also has an alumni group within LinkedIn – join that!

What do students do if they have an urgent career issue – who should they call or see?
Email MSB-MBACM@msb.edu or come to the front desk in our office. Never suffer in silence!
