GIF Dartboard: Betting on Beating the Market
There is barely a month left in my term as co-President of the Graduate Investment Fund, which is quite sad.

But while the GIF Elections next month will be a big step for me, this will not be even close to the most monumental and life-changing event taking in January.

Why, you may ask? Well, on the 14th day of 2008, a measurement will be taken of the relative “weighted portfolio loss” of two esteemed GIF members: Mr. Brian Dolan and Mr. Vincent Varghese.

Well, why does this concern me, a member of GIF or a reader of The Globe? Good question... but there is an equally good answer. In a word (or two): futures.

Classmates of this pair of ubercompetitive second-years have followed the advice of Prof. Williamson, done the
math, and found arbitrage opportunities. Futures, options, hedges, and whatnot have been placed. And shareholder value is at stake... as in, cold hard cash.

In more pertinent news, the top performer on the GIF Dartboard will get a gift certi! cate to The Tombs, and the
biggest laggard will receive a signed copy of “Dummies Guide to Investing”.

Good luck to all... Iceman is in 4th place, and he smells the Study Snacks...
